La Roche College Named Military Friendly College for Sixth Consecutive Year

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 27, 2014 – According to G.I. Jobs Magazine, a premier resource for veterans to find success in a civilian career, La Roche College ranks in the top 15 percent of all Military Friendly colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide.

This year marks the sixth consecutive year for La Roche to receive Military Friendly status. In 2009 La Roche became a Yellow Ribbon institution and works with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to reimburse 100 percent of veterans’ tuition cost. the University and government equally share costs associated with veterans obtaining their degrees as part of the program.

“We are proud of our military and veteran students. They bring with them tremendous real-life experience that adds to the fabric of the University environment,” Hope Schiffgens, director of graduate studies and adult education, said. “La Roche works closely with military and veteran students and offers a variety of services to accommodate their educational needs.”

Military and veteran students also find support through the Veterans Organization, one of more than 30 student clubs and organizations offered at La Roche. Established in 2013, the organization gives veterans the opportunity to meet each other, get involved on campus and receive support. Last year the organization held a Veterans Day panel for students and faculty members to share their military experiences with the student body.

Chase Warden, co-founder and president of the organization, said he and Nicholas Yund, who graduated in May 2014, created the group to unite the University’s veteran population.

“Many veterans go to class assuming they are the only ones there. Our goal is to help veteran students feel welcome by creating an opportunity for veterans to meet other veterans,” Mr. Warden, a senior in La Roche’s finance and management program, said. “We want the Veterans Organization to always be a place veterans will feel at home.”

La Roche offers credit for military services and welcomes all veterans, military students and their dependents to begin or complete their education on campus, through online learning or at one of its satellite campuses.

Those who are interested in the Yellow Ribbon Program at La Roche should contact Graduate Admissions Counselor Sherryl Lisco at 412-536-1263 or sherryl.lisco@laroche.edu.
