La Roche College to Host Scholastic Art Regional Awards and Ceremony

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 28, 2015 – La Roche University, an affiliate of the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, and North Allegheny School District, are proud to sponsor the 2015 Pittsburgh Arts Region Scholastic Art Awards.

More than 1,900 pieces were submitted this year by creative teens in grades seven through 12, 900 of which were awarded a Gold Key, Silver Key or an Honorable Mention in 15 categories, including film and animation, sculpture, fashion design, photography, comic art and design.

An exhibit of the award-winning work will be on display in the Cantellops Gallery and Zappala College Center at La Roche University from Feb. 7-22. The exhibition will feature more than 900 works of art and will be open daily to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., including weekends.

On Feb. 22 at 3 p.m., La Roche University will honor the award-winning participants at a ceremony in the Kerr Fitness and Sports Center. Refreshments will be served prior to the event at 1:30 p.m. in the Zappala College Center.

“It has been a joy and a privilege for La Roche University to be a part of the Scholastic Art Awards,” Assistant Professor Maria Ripepi Diven said. “The student artwork is always impressive and is a true testament to the talents of our local students, as well as the dedication of the art teachers in our region. Our campus is transformed during the Scholastic Art show. It becomes a place of inspiration – not just for our design students, but for all La Roche students, faculty, staff and visitors.”

The Scholastic Art Awards program is the longest-running, most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for creative teens in the U.S. It also is the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers. The Pittsburgh Arts Region, one of more than 100 affiliate organizations nationwide, oversees the Scholastic Art Awards in Allegheny and Butler counties. A panel of local artists, designers, educators and other arts professionals first judges all submissions locally. Works that are awarded a gold key are then presented to national panels of creative leaders for further adjudication.
