The Academic Enrichment Division (AED) was first known as Project Achievement/ACT 101. The Project Achievement/ACT 101 Program began at La Roche College in 1977 to provide academic support services to a small number of students. Since then it has grown in membership and scope. We are, however, always looking to increase our population and to find new techniques to support the total development of students including academic, social, leadership, and personal growth. The program is supported by funding from the college and through the State of Pennsylvania 's Act 101 Grant.
The primary mission of the Academic Enrichment division is to help students become active, independent and confident learners.
The Division houses several programs and services. The strongest program in the Division is the Project Achievement/ACT 101 Program. We are also the Center for Support Services for Students with Disabilities. The services include: group and individual tutoring for students in many of the academic divisions, the Supplemental Instruction (SI) Program which assists students in traditionally difficult academic courses, individual assistance with study skills, Study Skills Workshops and the Math Lab.
Student Employment and Training
The AED has two excellent training programs in place to prepare qualified La Roche students to become Paraprofessional Tutors and Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders. Each training program is unique and students may train to work as either a Tutor or SI Leader.
The Tutor Training Program is certified through The International Tutor Certification Program, sponsored by the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA). The purpose for gaining this certification is twofold.
First, it allows tutors to receive recognition and positive reinforcement for their successful work from an international organization, CRLA. Secondly, the certificates help set up a standard for the minimum skills and training a tutor needs to be successful.
There are nearly 60 undergraduate and professional people employed by the Academic Enrichment division. The advantages of joining the student staff at the Division are numerous. This is a great and meaningful employment opportunity for students in the Teacher Education Division! Students have the opportunity to meet other students from around the world! Students have the opportunity to develop their own self-esteem, offer service to others and grow in their own leadership capabilities. And, this is a great opportunity to include meaningful employment on your resume!
Collaborators With Faculty, Staff, and Administrators
In addition to its student services and paraprofessional training programs, the AED staff is available to La Roche's faculty, staff and administrators to work together on student referrals, retention initiatives, and other learning support programs.
