"What We Offer" Flier

The Academic Enrichment Division (AED) was first known as Project Achievement/ACT 101. The program began at La Roche College in 1977 to provide academic support services to a small number of students. Since then it has grown in membership and scope. We are, however, always looking to increase our population and to find new techniques to support the total development of students including academic, social, leadership and personal growth. The program is supported by funding from the college.

The primary mission of the AED is to help students become active, independent and confident learners.

The division houses several programs and services. The strongest program in the division is the Peer Tutoring Program which provides group and individual tutoring for students in many of the academic divisions, free of charge.  We are also the center for Learning and Support Services, offering assistance to students with additional learning accommodations, as well as the Supplemental Instruction (SI) Program, which assists students in traditionally difficult academic courses, and the Peer Mentoring Program which provides help to the Providence Institute students of the college.

Student Employment and Training

The AED has three excellent training programs in place to prepare qualified La Roche students to become paraprofessionals at the college. Each training program is unique and students may train to work for one, two, or all three programs.

The Tutor Training Program and the Peer Mentor Training Program are certified through The International Tutor Certification Program, sponsored by the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA). The purpose for gaining this certification is twofold.  First, it allows tutors to receive recognition and positive reinforcement for their successful work from an international organization (CRLA). Secondly, the certificates help to set up a standard for the minimum skills and training a tutor needs to be successful.

There are nearly 100 undergraduate and professional individuals employed by the AED of La Roche College.
The advantages of joining the student staff at the division are numerous – it provides a meaningful employment opportunity for students in the Teacher Education Division to meet other students from around the world, to develop their own self-esteem, to offer service to others and to grow in their own leadership capabilities.  It’s also a great experience and offers an avenue for you to include an excellent employment experience on your resume!

Collaborators With Faculty, Staff, and Administrators

In addition to its student services and paraprofessional training programs, the AED staff also is available to
La Roche's faculty, staff and administrators to work together on student referrals, retention initiatives, and other learning support programs.
