Supplemental Instruction Leader (SIL)
Overview
Professional Staff at the Academic Enrichment Division train the new SI Leaders. SI Leaders conduct regularly scheduled sessions to assist students in high-risk courses.
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program sponsored by the Academic Enrichment Center . SI targets traditionally difficult classes and provides regularly scheduled, out of class, peer facilitated sessions. These sessions are voluntary on the part of the student; however, SI participants earn higher course grades and will withdraw less often than non-SI participants. Students who attend SI sessions discover appropriate application of study strategies and become actively involved in the course material. SI leaders use the text, supplementary readings, handouts, and lecture notes as vehicles for learning skill instruction. Job Training Currently, A 4-day training course is available for SI Leader, through the Academic Enrichment Center . Topics included in the training program are as follows:
A. Orientation and Course review.
B. Videotape and a Supplemental Instruction Session.
C. Inside the Supplemental Instruction Program.
D. Small Group Discussion of the SI Leader as Model Student.
E. Classroom Assessment Techniques.
F. Planning SI Session.
G. Mock SI Sessions.
H. First Day Speech and Mock SI Session Delivery.
I. Paper Work for the Program and La Roche College .
J. Communication skills.
K. Interpersonal Skills of the SI Leader.
L. Learning Styles and Learning Assistance.
M. Study Skills Review.
Qualifications
1. Senior, junior, sophomore, or 2nd semester freshman standing is the Minimum required.
2. A grade of B+ or higher in the selected course and a GPA of 3.0 or higher are required.
3. Prior academic enrollment with the professor who is to teach the course is preferred.
4. Content competency is required.
5. Approval of the course instructor.
6. Good interpersonal and communication skills, responsible, and enjoy working closely with peers.
7. The ability to maintain a professional attitude at all times.
Responsibilities and Duties
Primary Responsibilities
1. Attend all class meetings of the selected course, take notes, do homework and read all assigned materials.
2. Conduct 2 to 3 fifty minute study sessions per week throughout the term using strategies learned through the SI leader training.
3. Meet Regularly with the SI supervisor.
- Discuss observations of the SI sessions.
- Discuss the creation and use of SI session handouts.
- Discuss the planning of SI sessions and use of a wide variety of the
identified learning strategies.
- Notify supervisor about problems or potential problems.
4. Assist SI supervisor in training other SI leaders.
5. Meet weekly with Professor of selected course.
6. Attend SI leader training prior to the beginning of each term.
Secondary Responsibilities
1. Provide extra SI sessions and/or marathon sessions as necessary(Discuss that with the supervisor).
2. Provide handouts for use during SI sessions.
3. Assert course requirements and maintain contact throughout the term with the course professor.
4.Meet with other campus SI leaders at scheduled meetings.
5. Complete necessary personnel paperwork.
6. Work with the SI supervisor to select appropriate times and scheduling of SI sessions.
7. Make periodic announcements about the availability of the SI sessions to the students.
8. Collect attendance data for every SI session.
9. Assist SI supervisor in the preparation of end-of-term reports and other reports as requested.
10. Maintain a professional attitude about matters such as class standards, grades, student complaints and confidentiality.
11. Model appropriate professional attitudes and behaviors to staff, students and others on and off campus.
12. Notify your SI supervisor in advance if you are unable to conduct an SI session as scheduled.
13. Maintain regular working hours.
Pay Scale and Hours
$7.25 trained undergraduate leaders.
$9.00 trained leaders with B.A or B.S Degree.
$11.00 trained leaders with Masters or at least five years of experience in their fields.
