Tutor Training Program
Overview
Trained paraprofessional and professional tutors provide support services for students in many of the 100 and 200 level courses. The tutors are also trained to give Study Skills assistance to students in the sessions.
1) The Tutor Training Program recently gained National Certification from the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
2) The staff of the Academic Enrichment Center recreates and trains paraprofessionals and professional tutors annually.
Qualifications
Paraprofessional applicants should meet the following qualifications:
1) Have excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
2) Have good organizational skills.
3) Possess good study skills habits.
4) Be punctual and considerate of others time.
5) Be dependable and responsible.
6) Have a commitment to working with and helping others.
7) Have an interest in promoting an environment of academic support for fellow students.
8) Enjoy working with peers.
9) Have patience in working with students with various needs.
10) Be enrolled as an undergraduate with a GPA of at least 2.75.
11) Have a grade of B+ or better in the course(s) you wish to tutor.
12) Provide excellent faculty recommendation(s) in the areas you wish to tutor.
Training
Tutor training occurs in a enjoyable and interactive environment. Every professional and paraprofessional newly hired tutor is required to take the 15hour training course, seminar in Collaborative Learning. Experienced tutors and SI leaders also assist in the training of new tutors. This course is certified by the CRLA. The course curriculum consists of peer helping skills, study skills, learning styles, and the Myers & Briggs Theory. The course is designed to provide students with the time they need in training to practice those communication, assertiveness, empathy skills they will use in their tutoring sessions.The course contains the knowledge and skills needed to be an effective individual and group tutor. After the initial training, all tutors will participate in continuing workshops.
Responsibilities and Duties
1) Be punctual for all tutoring sessions; contact Tutee ahead of time should you need to reschedule.
2) Be prepared for all tutoring sessions. Review summary notes from prior session and try to set a goal for each tutoring session. Evaluate student progress after each session.
3) Assess and then formulate a plan to meet the needs of the Tutee; in many cases Tutees need help with study and/ or learning techniques.
4) Report to the Tutorial Coordinator any problem areas effecting Tutees academic performance requiring either greater expertise or expertise unrelated to your tutor responsibility. The Coordinator will evaluate the nature of the problem and refer the Tutee to the appropriate campus office, e.g. personal counseling, basic reading, writing skills, etc.
5) As needed, refer Tutee to appropriate campus office (e.g. financial aid, registrar's office, finance office) and report the same to the Tutor Coordinator.
6) Assume the role of a friend, not an instructor. Do not try to fulfill an authoritative or professor image.
7) Attend scheduled meetings with other Tutors as requested by the Tutorial Coordinator.
Pay Scale and Hours
Rates vary from $7.15 to $11.00 depending on the service provided and degree obtained.
Hours
1) Flexible hours for tutoring.
2) 15 hours of initial training.
3) Workshops during academic year.
4) Individual supervision throughout the term.
