Students find that, once they enter college, they need to change their study habits, studying involves taking in, manipulating, processing, evaluating, storing, and using information, the study skills workshops offered at La Roche College use the information processing system of study which incorporate models of information processing and memory theory, students learn how to apply the knowledge they learn to practical strategies and techniques for studying.
Workshops and individual sessions
Study skills are taught by professional staff and trained professional students, or Students Academic Counselors (SACs).
The goals of the workshops
- To assist students to "learn how to learn".
- To demonstrate specific study skills techniques.
- To provide students with the opportunity to apply these techniques to their current course work.
- To discuss why these techniques work.
Workshops are available to all students, faculty and staff members of La Roche College. Workshops are 5-6 weeks in duration, meet for a 2-hour period weekly, and are limited to 15 students each. Workshops: What course grade goals do you have for yourself this semester? Do you want really to settle for a "C" when you can earn a better grade? You are invited to increase our GPA this semester and for the rest of your academic career! Take the study skills workshop and discover new ways o study effectively.
The Study Skills Workshop topics include, but are not limited to
- Time management.
- Lecture and Note taking skills.
- Textbook reading Strategies.
- Test preparation strategies.
- Test taking strategies.
- Test anxiety reduction.
- Memory Improvement.

Individual Assistance
One-on-one study skills assistance is available to students on a limited basis. The same topics are covered as are in the Study Skills Workshops. Individual assistance enable students to proceed at their pace, if needed. One-on-one assistance is an option for students whose class schedules conflict with the schedule of the workshops times. Study Skills Assessment: A Study Skills Survey is available for students to take. This survey will help the students identify their strength and weakness. Once taken, students on interview with one of the professional student academic counselor will talk about the results of the survey. The survey and interview are an integral part of the workshops and individual programs.
