La Roche College hosted its 20th Annual Golf Outing, The Scott Lang Memorial Classic, on Monday, September 26th at Wildwood Golf Club, in honor and in memory of its late basketball coach, Scott Lang.

Coach Lang played basketball while attending Mars Area High School, Butler County Community College and Clarion University of Pennsylvania.  He began coaching at La Roche College in 1993. Four years later, he was named head coach at age 27 – making him the youngest NCAA men’s head basketball coach in the United States.

Tragically, on December 10, 2010, while running his Redhawks team through practice, Coach Lang passed away at the age of 41.  Like the “little engine that could,”under the leadership of Coach Lang, the Redhawks extended their winning streak to six games.  In their first game following the death of their coach, the team courageously played for a 75-60 victory and a winning streak that reached 17 games.  Having never won more than 15 games in a season, the 2011 season ended with 25 wins and three losses.  The Redhawks won their first AMCC tournament title and made their first trip to an NCAA Division III tournament.  The players’ determination to go forward after losing their beloved coach and win the coveted title is Coach Lang’s legacy.

Scott was an enthusiastic and inspiring figure in the locker room, on the court, and far beyond the La Roche College community.  His familiar “Stay Blessed”greetings, leadership and infectious smile remain in the hearts of many.

WPXI personality Vince Sims served as master of ceremonies at the reception.
