Prizes
In the La Roche English Department, we're proud of our students' accomplishments-and one way we show our pride is through a series of prizes open to English majors and majors in other disciplines. These prizes are:
The Sr. Rita Yeasted Scholarship
This scholarship, a gift of La Roche alumna Jill Ferguson, provides $1,000 to four English or Communication majors annually. The award is given for scholarship and service. Awardees are voted upon by the English Department.
The Sister Victorine Verosky Award for Scholarship and Service
Sister Victorine Verosky, CDP, one of the earliest members of the La Roche College faculty, exemplified scholarship throughout her life as a teacher, missionary, and servant-leader. In her honor, the English Department has established an award to be given to a graduating senior or seniors who have demonstrated scholarship in its varied forms: academic excellence, community and College service, presentations on or off campus, and a love of the discipline.
The Spirit of the Humanities Award
This award is given annually to a graduating English major who epitomizes the tradition of studying the humanities for the pure joy of it. The English Department determines the winner, who is honored at a reception for graduating seniors during the spring semester.
The Department of English Prize in Literary Scholarship
This prize, established in 2006, is awarded at the end of each spring semester for a superior student essay in literary scholarship (including essays on film and other forms of popular culture). Students submit essays in one of two categories, one for English majors and one for all other majors. A panel of faculty judges determines the winner based on the following criteria:
The originality, sophistication, and significance of the analysis;
The breadth, depth, and soundness of the scholarship;
The creativity, appropriateness, and precision of the prose.
The winner in each category is awarded a prize of $100. For complete information and instructions, contact Dr. Joshua Bellin at Joshua.Bellin@laroche.edu or (412) 536-1217.
