President's Message
It was quite an honor to be inducted as President of Theta Mu chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International on April 18, 2009.
Prior to that occasion, it caused me to reflect on my nursing career and what has brought me to this milestone today. My aspirations for a career in nursing began at a very young age. With each new endeavor in my career I have been challenged and excited to continue to learn how to be the best nurse possible.
As president of Theta Mu Chapter, I plan to continue the good works of those who have preceded me. The vision, we as a chapter need to present, are in alignment with Carol Huston the 27th President’s call to action. In Nov. 2007, at the Sigma Theta Tau International’s Biennial convention in Baltimore, MD, I along with several other Theta Mu board members had the privilege of hearing Carol’s inspirational acceptance speech “ Leading globally”. She addressed global health issues and cultural differences which impact the health care arena of today.
In today’s ever changing health care arena, it is imperative that nurses are aware of the impact of global health issues. Wherever we choose to practice, we must always strive to do our best for those who are placed in our care. By caring for people of all ages, races and nationalities we in essence are contributing to the concept of global health.
It was also at the Biennial that I had the pleasure of witnessing our Chapter receiving its third Key award. The Key awardis given to those chapters who after submitting application for the award are deemed to excel in membership, recruitment and retention, in publicity and programming, in professional and leadership development and in local, national and international collaboration. What an honor to join the other distinguished chapters in this special ceremony. It is with great pride I announce that Theta Mu is compiling all material for submission for our fourth Key award. We will be submitting our application for Key Award with our supporting documents within the next few weeks. So, I look forward to presenting our fourth key award at next year’s induction ceremony.
I would like to thank some special people. Judy Henry, who has been an exceptional president of our chapter and whose shoes it will be difficult for me to fill. Judy, has been instrumental in helping me transition into this new role and if she thinks she can hide from me – well, she is wrong. I know I will be calling her often for advice and insight. Again, thank you Judy, for your continued alliance and commitment to the leadership of Theta Mu.
To the other board members, each of you plays an important role in the success of our chapter and I would like to thank you each for your commitment to your role. I look forward to working with each of you to the good of the chapter.
To all members of Theta Mu, I would like to invite and encourage you to become actively involved in chapter endeavors. Below are the dates of chapter meetings planned for fall. Please plan to attend, as everyone’s input and ideas are always welcome. And, we usually have something good to eat. Always my philosophy, Feed Them and They Will Come !!
Hope to see you all in September.
