Students enrolled in La Roche College’s graphic design program can now point to an international promotional campaign and call it their work. They have designed a logo, posters and all other materials connected to the Rothko Centenary in Latvia. It is the celebration of the 100th birthday of Mark Rothko, a major figure in 20th century painting and Latvian native whose work is included in every major contemporary art museum.

“This represents an important accomplishment for La Roche’s graphic design program,” said Rosemary Gould, M.F.A., department chairperson. “It offers a tangible example of our students’ capabilities, and it is a truly rewarding experience for them.”

Gould was instrumental in connecting the students to the promotional campaign during her time in Latvia as a Fulbright Scholar last year. While she was teaching at the University of Latvia, she met Marcia Carlson, wife of Brian Carlson, U.S. ambassador to Latvia. At Mrs. Carlson’s urging, Gould enlisted her students to begin work on the campaign, which was unveiled in Latvia earlier this spring. The posters and other materials will remain in place throughout the year.
