Boys and girls who participate in youth sports often learn important lessons that can serve them later in life, including the value of teamwork and the importance of good physical health. However, when children are pushed into early entry and early specialization by overzealous parents, they may be harmed by such experiences.

On Wednesday, October 22, the La Roche College Institute for Cross-Cultural Ethics (ICCE) will sponsor a forum titled “The Ethics of Youth Sports.” Keynote speaker is Dr. Gabriela Tymowski, Ph.D., assistant professor of ethics in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of New Brunswick. Dr. Tymowski is currently conducting research on the ethical implications of children’s participation in high performance sports, including the use of performance-enhancing substances.

The event begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Kearns Spirituality Center, located adjacent to La Roche College’s East Campus. General admission tickets are $8. Tickets for senior citizens are $5. Students are admitted for free when they present a student ID. For more information or to reserve a space, please call 412-536-1307 or e-mail
