Pittsburgh, PA -- This week, the leaders of the most powerful nations in the world met at a G8 summit to discuss, among other pressing issues, the effects of poverty around the globe. This week, high school students from across the region are conducting similar discussions as they attend PRISM (Poverty Research in a Social Science Mode), an interactive summer camp being held at La Roche College through Saturday, July 9.

“As the world becomes more and more interconnected, poverty and inequality are issues that the next generation must face,” said Paul LeBlanc, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at La Roche and organizer of PRISM. “This four-day session will hopefully give these young people some context to search for solutions.”

The 13 students enrolled in PRISM will attend workshops with La Roche College professors in history, political science, sociology, international studies and communications. They’ll also:

• Participate in a teleconference with personnel from the United Nations.

• Meet people who come from areas of the world that experience poverty.

• Engage in activities that will simulate what it is like to be poor.

Be part of a team that produces a video documentary focusing on what they have learned (in cooperation with Pittsburgh Filmmakers).

At the end of the camp, students will present the videos they have produced. <
