Pittsburgh, PA -- As communism spread over Eastern Europe at the close of World War II, few people knew the plight of those pursuing religious life in nations such as Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania. Decades later, the stories of brave women who faced oppression during this time have begun to emerge. To further illuminate these struggles, the La Roche College Scholar Program and the Department of History will host “Hidden Lives Revealed: The Story of Religious Life Under European Communism,” a presentation by Sr. Mary Christine Morkovsky.

Morkovsky is a visiting professor of philosophy at the College and has participated in forums with sisters who have survived this period of history. She has been instrumental in telling these women’s stories by serving as a skilled listener and translator to sisters in the Czech Republic and Hungary.

The forum will take place Thursday, October 13 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Ryan Room, located in the Zappala College Center on the East Campus. The session is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Sr. Sally Witt at 412-536-1286 or <
