Pittsburgh, PA -- The floodwaters in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina may have receded months ago, but efforts to fully recover from the storm may take years. La Roche College is responding to the ongoing need in the Gulf Region by offering assistance to a Catholic school in New Orleans.

In December, Sister Marilyn Bergt, CDP, coordinator of community service, traveled to St. Augustine High School in the city’s ninth ward. Floodwaters from Katrina filled the first floor for weeks, and evacuees used the second floor as a safe haven until the waters receded. The building sustained significant damage. The purpose of this initial trip was to assess how La Roche volunteers might be able to lend a hand in rebuilding the school. Bergt is formulating plans to take a team to New Orleans in March during the College's spring break.

“It seems only logical to have a Catholic school helping another Catholic school,” said Bergt.

La Roche volunteers have contributed to a number of important relief projects in the past year. That includes the “Team-4-A-Day” initiative, which focused on helping Pittsburgh area families recover from local flooding that occurred in September 2004 and January 2005.
