Pittsburgh, October 18, 2006 — La Roche professor Paul LeBlanc, Ph.D., recently had his book “Marx, Lenin, and the Revolutionary Experience: Studies of Communism and Radicalism in the Age of Globalization” published by Routledge. The book examines the consequences of communism through the lenses of anarchism, Christianity, conservatism, liberalism and Marxism. It also looks at ways that communism has impacted contemporary issues, such as war, terrorism and ecological crises. The book has been acclaimed by respected scholars as “a tour de force of clear writing and breadth of knowledge” and “a welcome, refreshing contribution.”

LeBlanc is dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at La Roche, as well as an associate professor of history. His other works include “A Short History of the U.S. Working Class” and “Black Liberation and the American Dream.” He is the associate editor of “The Encyclopedia of Protest and Revolution.”

“I wanted to develop a deeper understanding of how the Communist movement of the 19th and 20th centuries – which started off with the most idealistic of motives – had become associated with some of the worst dictatorships in human history,” LeBlanc said. “As I wrestled with that, I found that religious thought, especially Christianity, pressed its way into this study. As I worked on the book, I became more convinced than ever before that people have to be able to think knowledgeably and clearly about the realities of the past in order to reach most effectively for a positive future.”
