RENOWNED INTERIOR DESIGNER CARLETON VARNEY HEADLINES ANNUAL LA ROCHE COLLEGE DESIGN DIALOGUE SERIES ON OCT. 17

8/27/2007

Pittsburgh, Aug. 27, 2007 — One of America’s best-known designers will visit Pittsburgh in October as part of the La Roche College Interior Design Advisory Board Design Dialogue Series. Carleton Varney, president and owner of Dorothy Draper & Company, Inc., New York City, is the keynote speaker at the event, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center in the Strip District. He will begin his presentation at 6:15 p.m. The event is open to the public, and all proceeds benefit the La Roche College Interior Design program. Tickets are $30 for the general public; $20 for La Roche alumni; and $15 for students.

During his presentation, “Grand Style with the Draper Touch,” Mr. Varney will provide attendees a glimpse into the glamorous world of interior design and, in particular, Dorothy Draper & Company, Inc., the oldest established interior design firm in the United States. It is named after the founder of the company, who was one of the doyennes of interior design from the 1920s to the 1960s. The company is considered to be one of the most influential and impressive design firms in U.S. history. Mr. Varney will discuss what has made the firm and its employees so successful, including the ability to adapt to changing design tastes through the decades. He also will comment on types of design style and what makes someone favor one look over another.

Mr. Varney, a longtime protégé of Ms. Draper’s, and the Draper Company have built a design empire through the years, working on such notable projects as the Greenbriar Hotel and the Governor’s Mansion – both in West Virginia, hotels around the world, private residences, the White House and special projects such as the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. The business has expanded to include furniture, books, eyewear, ties, fabric, carpets – even coffee and hot cocoa.

For ticket information or more details, interested people may call the La Roche College Interior Design Department at 412-536-1024 or visit www.laroche.edu.
