SUMMER NURSING INSTITUTE RETURNS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CONTEMPLATING A NURSING CAREER
Pittsburgh, February 7 — Once again this summer students in 8th, 9th and 10th grade, who are contemplating a nursing career will have the opportunity to learn about the many rewarding opportunities that are possible in that field through the Second Annual Summer Nursing Institute from Tuesday, June 24, through Friday, June 27.
“The demand for nurses is becoming critical with the shortage estimated to reach 1.1 million by 2012,” said La Roche Department of Nursing Professor Lynette Beattie, R.N., M.S.N.
“It is crucial that the nursing community increase awareness of what a career in nursing has to offer. With that in mind, the La Roche College Department of Nursing, in collaboration with UPMC Passavant, is sponsoring the second annual Summer Nursing Institute,” Beattie said.
During the four-day event, participants will spend time at both La Roche College and UPMC Passavant and will cover the following topics: Skills Lab Instruction, First Aid Training, CPR Certification and Clinical Rotation. They will tour the hospital’s laboratory and the respiratory therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy units, in addition to shadowing nurses in various hospital departments.
Students will also get to speak with health professionals about their careers and experience the WISER Center at UPMC Passavant (Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation, Education and Research), a state-of-the-art simulation center where UPMC health care professionals learn to provide the highest level of safe patient care.
“Our ultimate goal is to provide the participants with the information necessary for them to make an informed decision regarding their future educational career plans,” said Sarah L. Ziccardi, R.N., M.S.N., New Hire Support at UPMC Passavant.
The cost of the program is $25 with enrollment limited to 20 students. Registration will be open through Friday, May 16. Students may register by e-mailing Ms. Beattie at firstname.lastname@example.org.
