Pittsburgh, Oct. 20, 2008 — Rich Helfrich, M.F.A., assistant professor of Graphic & Communication Design, won the Faculty Thesis Proposal Award from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). SCAD notified Helfrich of the award on Monday, Oct. 13.

This $500 award is given to one graduate student who is chosen from all those who have prepared thesis proposals during the summer/fall quarter 2008. A committee of faculty reviews all thesis proposals and selects one to win this award. Helfrich completed his thesis, titled “Reducing Pediatric Look-alike, Sound-alike Medication Errors Through Improved Typographic Label Readability & Tactile Differences of Medication Packaging,” and earned his M.F.A. during summer 2008.

“The proposal was selected from several other strong ones, so you should take heart in knowing that the selection committee (faculty from a variety of disciplines) found yours to be the most promising and the most outstanding,” said Edwayd J. Dupuy, Ph.D., dean of graduate studies, in notifying Helfrich of the award.

Helfrich resides in Bethel Park, Pa., with his wife Amy and children Lucas, 5, and Lilly, 2.
