LA ROCHE COLLEGE TO HOST TRIBUTE BASKETBALL GAME
Pittsburgh, November 20, 2008 ó On Tuesday, Nov. 25, the La Roche College menís basketball team will take on Geneva College in a special tribute game to celebrate the life of former La Roche student Michael Bird. The game will take place at the Kerr Fitness & Sports Center, on La Rocheís main campus, McCandless Township. The doors will open at 7 p.m., with tip off slated for 7:45 p.m.
Bird was a sophomore radiology student at La Roche whose life was tragically cut short on the first day of class, Aug. 25, 2008, after collapsing while playing basketball in the Fitness Center. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner determined that Bird died from coronary anomaly, a congenital heart defect. At La Roche, Bird was involved in many activities, and he hoped to one day make the basketball team at the College. He was going to try out for the team again this year, as he had done in the past.
Because Bird touched so many lives at the College, marketing students have come together to celebrate his life by hosting the tribute game in his honor. Admission will be $1 at the door, and more than 10 donated gift baskets will be raffled off in a Chinese auction. Student organizers also plan to donate a portrait of Bird to his parents during the gameís halftime, and a basketball jersey will be retired in his memory.
All proceeds from the event will go towards the cost of naming rights for a section of the Wright Library on campus to be named after Bird, when the library undergoes renovations this spring.
