Pittsburgh, February 19, 2009 — Students from Shaler Area, North Allegheny and Central Catholic High Schools were winners in this year’s SCHOLAR – Art Show 2009 that took place the first two weeks of February in the Cantellops Art Gallery, inside the Zappala College Center, on the La Roche College main campus.

This year marked the third exhibit of SCHOLAR students in Art and Design and SCHOLAR Program Director Chiara Sauret was pleased with the quality of work in this year’s show.

“The overall quality of the artwork in the show was exceptional. The judges and the public both gave enthusiastic remarks about the pieces of art,” Sauret said. “The show was also successful because we met our goal of opening up the College to the community.”

The student work was judged in two categories: color drawing and painting, and black and white drawing and painting. Taking top honors were:

Color Drawing and Painting

First Place: Tim Napoli, North Allegheny Senior High School, “When in Vogue” Second Place: Joe Kameen, Central Catholic High School, “Untitled” Third Place: Rachel Pasikoski, North Allegheny Senior High School, “Life Cycles”

Black and White Drawing and Painting

First Place: Annie Balzer, Shaler Area High School, “I’d Prefer Water, Thank You” Second Place: Joe Kameen, Central Catholic High School, “Untitled” Third Place: Cory Elder, Shaler Area High School, “The Evolution of Thought”

Taking the Best in Show honors was also Cory Elder of Shaler Area for his piece titled “Second Chance” and receiving an Honorable Mention for “Grandma’s Telephone” was Annie Balzer of Shaler Area.

This year 19 public and private schools are participating in the SCHOLAR program, the concurrent enrollment partnership between La Roche College and western Pennsylvania high schools. Since 1995, SCHOLAR has enabled qualified high school juniors and seniors to earn credits toward a college degree. As students become part of the La Roche community, they are encouraged to become lifelong learners who can participate in the resolution of contemporary social, political and moral issues.
