Pittsburgh, April 17, 2009 — A unique project has been under way at La Roche College where the Interior Design Department’s Freshman Studio class explored “ergonomics through cardboard” with their annual cardboard chairs project. Students were required to create a chair out of corrugated cardboard that was capable of withstanding 150 pounds without tipping. No fasteners could be used, with the exception of wood glue.

The purpose of the project was for classmates to get better acquainted, to experience working in a team and to simulate the design-build process in a small-scale project, according to Department Chair Nicole Bieak-Kreidler. The chairs will be on display in the hallway outside of the College bookstore through the end of the semester.
