LA ROCHE COLLEGE ATHLETES COLLECT DONATION FOR HAITI

2/17/2010

Pittsburgh, Feb. 12, 2010 — La Roche College student athletes collected more than $200 in late January at a Redhawks basketball game and donated the money to Haiti relief efforts. Members of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) decided before the game that they wanted to do something to help the people affected by the devastating earthquake, so they conducted a 50-50 raffle during halftime at the Jan. 23 game. The funds were then donated to recently retired Professor Roberta Hartman, Ph.D., former chair of the Chemistry Department, who left Saturday, Jan. 30, for a mission trip to Haiti.

Dr. Hartman, a Peters Township resident, had planned the trip in May 2009 and was expected to teach laboratory procedures to school students there. Instead, she left her teaching supplies at home and planned to test water quality on this trip.

“That will be of more help to the residents there,” she said. “We’ll save the laboratory supplies, and I’ll teach the students about that in the future.”

This was Dr. Hartman’s fourth trip to Haiti; her first was in 2005 when she and her husband, Tom, an architect, visited the country and worked to help establish a school, clinic and housing facility. This time, the Hartmans left with a group of 13 others, many of whom are health care professionals, and transported medicine and medical equipment to the capital city of Port au Prince. The La Roche students learned of Dr. Hartman’s trip and decided that their fund-raising profits should go toward helping her group’s efforts.

Assistant Director of Housing & Residence Life at La Roche, Anne Lahoda, also was involved in the collection and worked with the following SAAC students: Anthony Pici, a men’s soccer player, from Monroeville, Pa., the son of Diane Pici of Monroeville, and Mike Pici of Penn Hills, Pa.; Katherine Golebie, a women’s soccer player, daughter of Keith and Elaine Golebie of West Mifflin, Pa.; and John Caruso, a baseball player, son of Dave and Luella Caruso of Homer City, Pa.
