LA ROCHE COLLEGE ANNOUNCES RETURN OF REGIONAL SCHOLASTIC ART AWARDS

10/29/2010

Pittsburgh, PA – October 29, 2010 — After a ten-year absence, the Regional Scholastic Art Awards are returning to the Pittsburgh area. La Roche College, an Affiliate of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, is sponsoring the awards this year, with support from North Allegheny School District. The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers is a nonprofit organization dedicated to recognizing the nation's outstanding teen artists and writers.

Students from Allegheny and Butler counties can submit entries now through January 7, 2011 in 16 categories including film and animation, digital art, architecture, printmaking, fashion design and photography. A panel of local jurors comprised of artists, designers, educators and other arts professionals will evaluate entries based on originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal vision or voice. Regional gold key winners will qualify for the national competition and will also be eligible for nearly $4 million in scholarship awards.

Pittsburgh native M. R. Robinson, the founder of Scholastic Inc., the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards sponsor, created the awards in 1923. Since then, more than 13 million of America’s most talented teens have participated in the awards and 2.5 million students have been recognized through exhibitions and publications. A noteworthy roster of previous winners includes: artists Andy Warhol, Kay WalkingStick, Robert Indiana and Philip Pearlstein, photographer Richard Avedon, fashion designer Zac Posen, and Robert Redford.

An awards ceremony for the Pittsburgh Arts Region will be held on February 6, 2011 at La Roche College. The award-winning student work will be exhibited in the La Roche College Cantellops Art Gallery from February 6-18, 2011. The exhibit will be free and open to the public everyday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program is supported nationally by Scholastic Inc., the Maurice R. Robinson Foundation, Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, Command Web Offset, The New York Times, Dick Blick Co., Ovation, AMD Foundation and New York Life Foundation.
