LA ROCHE COLLEGE NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE COACH SCOTT LANG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Pittsburgh, PA -- May 5, 2011 – La Roche College today announced that applications are now being accepted for academic scholarships offered through the Coach Scott Lang Memorial Fund. The fund was established at the request of Coach Lang’s family and friends. Lang, 41, the college’s accomplished men's basketball coach, died suddenly on Dec. 10 after collapsing during practice.
“Endowing a scholarship in Scott's memory is a way for our family and friends to thank God for Scott's life and to say thank you for the many years Scott had to spend each day with Christian friends who respect and love each other and who are, with God's help, working together to make our world a better place through education,” said Mrs. Mary Ellen Dickson, Scott’s mother.
Coach Lang’s family has requested that the scholarship funds be made available to undergraduate students – both domestic and international – in the following majors: child and family studies, criminal justice, religious studies, elementary education or English education (language and literature).
"A college education is a priceless asset to anyone's life,” explained Mrs. Dickson. “Opportunities for continued learning were a large part of the richness of Scott's life. Remembering how Scott simply loved being around people, we selected these majors because we believe they encourage positive relationship building." She added, “Scott was a man who tried to live each day in gratitude to God for all that he had. His final words to his brother were ‘Remember Mike, while others may be wealthy, we are rich.’”

Coach Lang, a Mars, PA native and McCandless resident, was in his 18th year at La Roche and his 14th as head basketball coach. His La Roche teams are two-time recipients of the Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award, most recently this year. The award is voted on by the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association and presented annually to a school in the NCAA Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference
In his playing days, Lang was named to the Post-Gazette North Fabulous Five (1988) and was also a three-time all-section performer at Mars High School. He began his collegiate career at Butler County Community College where he became the all-time assists leader and free throw percentage leader. He led the Pioneers to the WPCC Championship game both seasons where they eventually lost to national champion Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC). Lang concluded his playing career at Clarion University, earning a scholarship and enjoying two seasons of 19 and 16 wins respectively.
In remembering Coach Lang, La Roche College President Sister Candace Introcaso, CDP, Ph.D. said, "We have lost a great friend, a man of unwavering faith and a beloved role model and mentor to his team and so many of our students. We are grateful to Scott’s family and friends for their generosity in continuing Scott’s legacy through the lives of students who will receive scholarship assistance from this fund.”
