LA ROCHE COLLEGE TO HOST TWO-TIME PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING COLUMNIST NICHOLAS KRISTOF

9/17/2012

Pittsburgh, PA ~ September 17, 2012 – On Monday, Oct. 29, New York Times columnist and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Nicholas D. Kristof will be speaking at La Roche College as part of the college’s 50th anniversary celebration. His presentation, “A Call to Action: Encouraging Young People to Join the ‘World’s Fight’ and Take on a Cause Larger than Themselves,” is free and open to the public.

A seasoned journalist, Kristof has lived on four continents, reported on six, and traveled to 140 countries and all 50 states. Often called the ‘reporter’s reporter,’ he is known for his focus on global health, poverty and gender issues, and has brought broad attention to human rights issues in Darfur and the Congo, as well as raised awareness on issues including human trafficking and the oppression of women worldwide. A reporter, columnist and book author, Kristof has won two Pulitzer Prizes and been nominated for six.

“We chose Nicholas Kristof as a presenter because of his interest in covering global issues involving peace and social justice, as well as the compassion that he shows on these subjects,” said Dr. Howard Ishiyama, vice president for academic affairs and academic dean at La Roche College. “We believe that his message will resonate with our students and the broader La Roche community—and we hope, with anyone who wants to make a difference in the world.”

The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. in the Kerr Fitness and Sports Center on the La Roche Campus. A reception will precede the presentation at 6 p.m. There is no cost, but preregistration is required to attend either event as seating is limited. Kristof will be available to sign books following the event. Registration can be done online at www.laroche.edu, by emailing Gina Work at gina.work@laroche.edu or by calling 412-536-1097.
