LA ROCHE COLLEGE’S POSITIVE SPACE ART SHOWCASE TO DEBUT ON MARCH 13
PITTSBURGH, Feb. 19, 2014 – Positive Space, La Roche College’s annual juried art and design show, will debut on Thursday, March 13, at 7 p.m. in the Cantellops Art Gallery at La Roche’s main campus in the North Hills.
Organized by La Roche graphic design students, Positive Space displays more than 150 works of art submitted by students who have completed a minimum of one art or design-related course. The exhibit will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., including weekends, until April 6. Admission is free.
“The graphic design seniors at La Roche have been doing a fantastic job in taking charge of the planning and promotion of the show,” Miranda Hall, assistant professor of graphic design, said. “They also will be responsible for coordinating the opening event, as well as all of the other events and activities related to Positive Space. The faculty are pleased to see this level of involvement and diligence by our students to make this event a continued success.”
The theme of this year’s competition is Design Realized, which encourages artists to discover design principles hidden in their surroundings. Nikki Johnson, a graphic design student at La Roche, said that the 2014 showcase was inspired by the design fundamentals that artists use to convey a concept or idea.
“As design students, one of the first things we learn about are the foundations of design and how they can be used to visually display a concept, mood or theme,” Ms. Johnson said. “Once you understand these terms, they become more apparent in our everyday lives.”
This year, the show will feature artwork across 18 categories: foundation design; drawing and painting; 3-D modeling; photography; sustainable design; miscellaneous; illustration; integrated branding; packaging; publication design; typography; interactive and multimedia; commercial design; innovative design; lighting; materials and finishes; rendering; and residential design.
All entries are evaluated by outside professionals in the fields of graphic and interior design. Judges review each entry and award first, second and third place prizes. The top honor is the Best of Show Award. The awards ceremony will be held at 8 p.m. in the Zappala College Center on opening night.
La Roche design students also encourage Instagram users to follow @PositiveSpaceLRC to participate in a daily photo challenge. All participants will have their photos displayed at opening night, and a Viewers Choice Award will be awarded for the photo voted as the crowd’s favorite.
