General Introduction

According to a 2009 report by the Global Health Workforce Alliance , there were an estimated 210,800 humanitarian aid workers in the world in 2008 with a predicted growth of six percent, annually.  With this increased need comes a demand for more trained workers who can provide effective and sustainable relief responses. A study commissioned by the Learning Research for Humanitarian Assistance (ELRH) in 2010 entitled “Professionalising the Humanitarian Sector,” highlights this need:

“Following a decade in which the humanitarian sector has sought to develop global standards, codes and representative bodies, there is growing momentum to explore the potential for creating a unified system of professional development, accreditation and association, which could increase accountability, raise the quality and consistency of humanitarian service, open up the profession to talented new recruits, and raise the status of the humanitarian service provider to a level on a par with other professional groups.”

Consistent with its mission of peace and justice, La Roche College is proud to offer its new program in Global Development and Humanitarian Aid, aimed at providing entry level field workers with high quality, affordable training ,that is modeled on the most recent professional standards and competencies. Partnering with RedR UK, one of the world’s premier training organizations, the program includes:
