Pittsburgh, January 9—Four La Roche College English majors have been named Sister Rita Yeasted Award recipients. Each student will receive a $1,000 scholarship for the spring semester.
La Roche alumna Jill L. Ferguson established the scholarship in 2000 in honor of La Roche’s English Department Chairwoman Sister Rita Yeasted, Ph.D. Ferguson currently lives in San Carlos, Calif., and is a professor of creative writing, communication and literature at San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She is the author of the book, “Sometimes Art Can’t Save You.” Ferguson, a 1992 graduate of La Roche, created the scholarship to honor Yeasted’s contributions to the field of English education and her personal involvement with students through the years. Scholarship recipients must be returning La Roche students who are communications or English majors with a minimum 3.5 GPA.
This year’s scholarship recipients are Kelly Crooks, a junior English Education major from Pittsburgh’s Beechview neighborhood; Marta Sauret, a junior professional writing major from the North Hills; Katherine Ballard, a senior English education/English language and literature major from the North Hills; and Megan Santypal, a senior professional writing major from Cranberry Township.
