Student artwork took over the Zappala College Center's Ryan Room and Cantellops Art Gallery in March. The College hosted the ninth annual Positive Space student art exhibition, which featured graphic design, multimedia, illustration, three-dimensional design, photography, painting and drawing. Any La Roche student who had taken at least one college art class could submit work for consideration.

"This is a chance for a student to take one or two pieces, refine them, and put their best work up against the best work of their colleagues," said Pat Connolly, instructor in the College's graphic and communication design department.

The faculty did not serve as judges for this event. As in past years, the College invited working professionals to serve in that function. Connolly believes that brings an added benefit to the students who participate.

"These judges are scrutinizing the students' work for professional merit - for presentation, for the quality of their work, for their concepts and ideas," said Connolly.

The judges for this year's exhibit were: Brian Staszel, Brady Interactive; David Coulson, Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators; Deborah Weightman, Kendra Power Design and Communi-cations, Inc.; and Francis R. Esteban, former president of B D & E.

Judges chose 85 of the 400 entries to put on display. This year's best of show award went to Chris Werger, a sophomore graphic design major. Werger received the top award for a series of Abbie Hoffman posters. All of the winning entries for Positive Space were on display throughout March.
