TECHNOLOGY GRANT

The College is poised to better prepare students for the 21st century thanks to federal support awarded in January. The $600,000 award will pay for technology infrastructure in the Zappala College Center expansion, scheduled for completion in August 2002. The funds will be used for "smart" classrooms, which will be wired for telecommunications, data transmissions, Internet access and cable television. Congress approved the grant as part of the FY 2002 Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations Bill. President Bush signed the bill into law.

"This funding represents a significant benefit for current and future La Roche College students," said Monsignor Kerr. "All of us at the College are extremely grateful to the members of the Pennsylvania Congressional delegation for their efforts in securing this funding, which helps position La Roche on the cutting edge of instructional technology."

Construction on the Zappala College Center expansion began in August 2001. In addition to the 13 "smart" classrooms, the project includes the addition of two seminar rooms, 13 faculty offices and computer laboratories.

"These classrooms will provide our faculty with access to the latest teaching technology, while at the same time helping to prepare our students to function effectively in this age of information," said Kerr.
