At the end of each academic year, La Roche College recognizes two outstanding undergraduate students by giving them the President's Award for Leadership and Scholarship. This year's honorees were Melissa Blythe (right) and Susan Brown (left). Both received their awards at the Graduates' Breakfast and Awards Presentations, held on Friday, May 3 in the Kerr Fitness and Sports Center.
Melissa Blythe graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications design. The Greensburg Central Catholic High School graduate is from North Huntingdon. She plans to go backpacking in Europe for most of the summer. In August, she begins volunteering with Americorps as a staff member at a community center in either New York City or San Francisco.
Susan Brown graduated with a bachelor's degree in administration and management. She resides in Franklin Park and is the mother of two teenage sons. Brown said she returned to school after years as an office manager, realizing that a degree is what she would need to further her career.
La Roche faculty members nominate students to receive the award. A committee selects one traditional-aged student and one nontraditional-aged student. To be considered for the award, students must obtain a minimum GPA of 3.0, must exemplify the values in the College's mission statement, and must demonstrate leadership in their communities or on campus.
