Sister Carolyn WinschelSister Carolyn Winschel has held many titles at La Roche College. Probably none is more fitting than the one bestowed upon her this spring. Members of the Congregation of Divine Providence named her this year's "Woman of Providence." Winschel, senior vice president for mission and planning at La Roche, received the award at the College's commencement on May 4.

"I felt very humbled," said Winschel, who will celebrate her 48th year as a member of the Congregation of Divine Providence in September. The award is given annually to a member of the Congregation of Divine Providence whose life of service - as a part of the mission of the Congregation - is a compelling example of God's providence made visible. The award citation noted that "Sister Carolyn Winschel exemplifies these characteristics in a very special way and La Roche College has been the fortunate beneficiary of the life of this woman of Providence."

"I work to extend God's providence in the way I treat other people," said Winschel. "I try to be attentive to people - whether they are students, faculty or staff - by being a good listener and responding to their needs."

Winschel earned her B.Ed. from Duquesne University, her M.Ed. from Pennsylvania State University and her Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. She first came to La Roche in 1975 as the assistant to the president. She was elected to the Provincial Council in 1980 and served as councilor, business manager, and later as the first development officer for the Congregation. She returned to La Roche in 1993 as executive vice president. In 2001, Winschel assumed her current title. She is also the assistant to the Divine Providence provincial director.
