Remembering
911
On
the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks that occurred on
September 11, 2001, La Roche College joined the nation in remembering
the lives that were lost. The College began the day by observing a
moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time when the first hijacked plane
hit the World Trade Center in New York City. Later, College administrators,
faculty, staff and students joined members of the Sisters of Divine
Providence Congregation for a prayer at the Peace Pole. Erected by
the Sisters in 1978, the pole is located between the entrances to
the Provincial House and the College’s East Campus. Father Peter
Horton, campus minister, served as celebrant for the gathering.
“We are a global community gathered here from many nations around
the world,” said Horton. “Through this prayer, we recommit
ourselves to build a peaceful and loving world without war or violence,
a world filled with justice for all, a world of light and life.”
During the day, community members were invited to sign a Book of Commitment
to maintain a peaceful campus throughout the day. The College also
sponsored an interactive peace-painting event on the lawn in front
of the Wright Library. Members of the campus community attended a
prayer service held in the Zappala College Center during the day.
In the evening, the College hosted a candlelight vigil and prayer
for peace in the Magdalen Chapel. |
