JOHN J. WRIGHT LIBRARY RECEIVES GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES
Pittsburgh – The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) recently awarded the John J. Wright Library the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf, a collection of resources that will introduce the public to Muslim heritage and history.
The John J. Wright Library is one of 842 libraries and state humanities councils selected to receive the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf, which includes a 25-book collection, along with three films and a one-year subscription to Oxford Islamic Studies Online. All awarded libraries are eligible for additional grant opportunities.
John J. Wright Library Director LaVerne Collins, who applied for the grant in the summer of 2012, said the Bookshelf aligns with La Roche College’s strong global commitment and dedication to cross-cultural understanding.
“The Muslim Journeys Bookshelf is an ideal fit for both the library and the College,” Collins said. “The large number of Muslim students and our domestic students might use this opportunity to foster understanding and lifelong learning – both by attending the library’s programming and reading the wonderful books.”
Presented by NEH and the American Library Association (ALA), the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf is a project of Bridging Cultures, an initiative that promotes an understanding and shared respect for the world’s diverse cultures and faiths. The Bookshelf focuses on five themes: American stories, connected histories, literary reflections, pathways of faith and points of view.
The collection will be available to all members of the library. La Roche College faculty also will use the materials for history, political science, literature, religious studies, criminal justice and international business courses.
