What is History?

History is not only the story of "what happened" but the exciting study of power and power-shifts, of social movements and diverse cultures, of ideas and governments and social classes, of economic and social systems, of creativity and destructiveness and renewal - encompassing the lives of "the rich and famous" and also the lives of "ordinary people" such as ourselves.

La Roche History Focus

The La Roche College History Department has designed its under-graduate history program to help those seeking a major or minor in History to grow as future leaders in their field. Its international focus provides a comparative perspective connecting the history of the United States with the histories of other peoples and lands.

The History Major requires 36 total credits, of which nine credits are basic courses in American history and Western Civilization. The 300 (advanced) level involves 15 credits from a broad range of world and U.S. history course options (six must be in U.S. history, and six in non-U.S. history). In addition, 12 elective credits can be chosen from among a broad range of political science, geography, sociology, religion and philosophy courses.

Some students majoring in History can choose to earn a dual major in one of the other social sciences (political science, sociology, international studies, communications, criminal justice/national security studies), or in another academic discipline of their choosing. This academic enrichment can help open up many career opportunities.
