Majoring in Interior Design
at La Roche College
From corporate office buildings to single-family homes, interior designers make spaces come alive. It's a profession that requires creativity, precision and skill. The interior design program at La Roche College will provide you with a strong foundation of knowledge that will help you to establish a successful career in design. While you're here, you'll use the same cutting-edge software and technology used by professionals in the field.
The La Roche Approach
For you to obtain an edge before you graduate, you need practical experience in interior design techniques and technology. You will have that opportunity at La Roche.
Our interior design program has been continuously accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation since 1985. You will receive experience in many areas of interior design such as residential, corporate offices, health care, hotels, retail, restaurants, etc. Our comprehensive program produces well-rounded students with diverse design backgrounds, an asset to any employer. Our program emphasizes the history and theory of design, building and computer technologies, and sustainable design. You'll benefit from a unique mentoring initiative for new students that partners you with an upper-class interior design student.
Want to spend time in a professional interior design setting? You'll have that chance at La Roche. All interior design students complete an internship before graduating. Companies that have hosted La Roche interns in the past include Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann, The Design Alliance Architects, Trans-Pacific Design (in Hawaii ) and many other architectural and design firms in Pittsburgh .
You'll also benefit from the Interior Design Advisory Board's Design Dialogue Series. Each year, the series brings a well-known design professional to the College to deliver a presentation and to spend time with students in the Interior Design program. Recent presenters are: Susan Szenasy, Editor-In-Chief of Metropolis magazine (2006), Jordan Mozer, widely published Chicago architect and designer (2005) and Shashi Caan, Contact magazine's 2004 Designer of the Year.
Faculty Focus
La Roche's interior design faculty members are some of the finest on campus and bring many areas of expertise to the program. Of the five full-time faculty, four are trained architects, three are trained interior designers, two are design researchers, one sits on the national CIDA Accreditation Commission, and one whose doctoral focus is sustainable design. All five combine many years of experience as design educators. The experience of our full-time faculty is complemented by 10 talented and diverse adjunct faculty who often are involved in professional practice.
What Can I Do With My Degree?
• You may be employed by an interior design or architectural firm, a retail store, or the design division of a corporation or institution.
• You may decide to be self-employed and work out of your own studio.
• Some interior design graduates become representatives for various manufacturers.
• You may go into a graduate program in architecture or interior design.
• Project types range from residential to commercial and include new construction as well as renovations to existing buildings.
