
AIFS annually awards more than $230,000 in scholarships to students who demonstrate high academic achievement and write an essay as detailed on the application. AIFS offers six types of scholarships, all of which can be used only on AIFS programs.
AIFS International Scholarships promote international understanding through study abroad. The awards celebrate the founding more than 37 years ago of the American Institute For Foreign Study. AIFS offers up to 150 semester scholarships of $1,000 each annually as well as up to 50 summer scholarships of $750 each for use on AIFS programs. Minority Scholarships help increase the participation of ethnic minority college students in study abroad programs.
Minority Scholarships help increase the participation of ethnic minority college students in study abroad programs. Recipients are expected to be ambassadors of international understanding within their communities upon return. Two Minority Scholarships for full tuition, room, board and transportation are awarded, one per semester. Three runner-up Minority Scholarships each worth $2,000 are awarded per semester.

The AIFS Foundation Krak-w Scholarship - The AIFS Foundation will award approximately ten scholarships of $2,000 each to students on the summer program at the Polonia Institute of Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. (click here for details on the program.) The scholarships have been established by donors to the AIFS Foundation to enhance bilateral relations between the United States and Poland by giving American students the opportunity to take courses in Polish language, history and culture at the Polonia Institute of Jagiellonian University in Krak-w, Poland. Students will be selected on the basis of merit by the American Institute For Foreign Study (AIFS) Foundation. If possible, scholarship recipients will make a special weekend trip to Warsaw for a meeting at the American Embassy.
Paul Moonves Memorial Scholarship - To honor Paul Moonves, former AIFS Treasurer and Executive Vice President, two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded by the AIFS Foundation on the basis of merit to students on programs in Amsterdam, Holland, and Rome, Italy. The scholarships will be awarded to students based on outstanding potential and innovative spirit, rather than past academic performance. Students will need to meet all existing AIFS GPA requirements. A selection committee, which includes friends and colleagues of Mr. Moonves, will meet each semester to review the submitted essays and award the scholarships.
Tcherepnine Scholarship - Four $2,500 scholarships annually for the St. Petersburg program. To honor the Russian composer Alexander Tcherepnine whose son is an AIFS Board Member, four $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to students participating in the St. Petersburg program. Eligible students must have a 3.0 GPA or better.
Deadlines are the same as for existing AIFS grants October 15 for spring semester and April 15 for fall.
