Sister Joan Coultas (2000)

Sister Joan Coultas-photoSister Mary Joan Coultas entered the Congregation from Duquesne, PA in 1953. Her life of scholarship in education and psychology was nurtured as she pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in English and History from Duquesne University and a Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of Dayton. She earned a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the Catholic University of America.

Sister Mary Joan has been associated with La Roche University for the past 30 years. She has held a variety of positions including Dean of Students, Director of Counseling Services, a member of the psychology faculty, and member of the Board of Trustees. She served as President of the college from 1975 to 1980. During her tenure as president, two residence halls (Mahler Hall and Schneider Hall) were constructed, as well as the A.J. Palumbo Science Center.

From 1970-1990, Sister Mary Joan held elected leadership positions in the Congregation of the Sister of Divine Providence. She served two terms as a provincial council member and two terms as the provincial director. Her leadership skills have been evidenced on numerous boards and committees including Divine Providence Hospital, Leadership Pittsburgh, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, the Catholic Health Association Sponsor’s Committee, and Union National Bank.

Currently, Sister Mary Joan is in private practice as a counseling psychologist with Fogarty, Rufft, Turbiner. Her work includes individual and couple psychotherapy, testing, group work, and career counseling. Sister Mary Joan is a much sought after lecturer on topics related to applied psychology and team leadership. Many religious groups hyave benefited from her consultation and facilitation. Her life has been one of leadership and service. Her dedication is rooted in a deep and vibrant relationship with a Provident God. Sister Mary Joan Coultas is a Woman of Providence whom La Roche University is proud to honor.
