Greer Reed ’16 is a Teaching Artist for Pittsburgh Public Schools.
How did La Roche prepare you for your current position?
I have been a dance educator in the public school sector over the past 16-plus years. La Roche has given me the opportunity to spread my wings in the higher education realm. With my degree, I now can apply for university/college positions with confidence because of my accomplishments.
Are you involved with any volunteer service projects?
I am the Founding Artistic Director of REED DANCE, a training pre-professional dance company for youth. It is important that I give back and prepare young dancers for the realities that come with a career in the arts. The most important thing I teach is that while they are learning dance, they must continue to learn themselves so they are prepared for whatever life throws their way.
How did your degree from La Roche help you advance your career?
It gives me the upper hand in choosing dance positions that require a degree and my professional experience.
Why did you choose La Roche?
I chose La Roche because of the amazing dance program, and I knew the staff and administration would support me as an adult returning to school.
Why would you recommend La Roche to a prospective student?
All of the professors go above and beyond to make sure that every student gets a fair chance to be successful in his or her course of study.
What is your favorite memory of being a student at La Roche?
Meeting so many amazing people with different backgrounds and experiences. Some of my best friends are now between the ages of 18 and 22.
What are you most proud of when you look back on your college experience?
I am most proud of receiving the President’s Award for Leadership and Scholarship. My motto for life is, “Mediocrity is not an option.” I knew that if I was brave enough to return to school then I was going to do it in a big, big way.
What advice do you have for our students?
Be confident in knowing La Roche has prepared you for whatever the next steps are in your journey. Know it, and claim it! There may be many no’s before a yes, but the yes is where you are supposed to be.
