La Roche College to Host Catholic Common Ground Conversation on Nov. 9
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 17, 2016 – La Roche University invites the public to a Catholic Common Ground Conversation on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. to discuss “With the Help of Your Mercy: God’s Mercy and the Demands of Social Justice.”
Dr. Maureen Crossen, a theology professor at Carlow University, will facilitate the conversation in the Ryan Room of the Zappala College Center at La Roche’s campus in the North Hills.
“Too often God’s mercy can be made to sound as if it flows gently. However, the jealous God of sacred scripture rages with fury when those created in God’s image and likeness do not live up to the task of justice for those who suffer in so many ways,” Dr. Crossen, said. “In scripture ‘to love to do justice’ is the extension of God’s mercy. The irony is – we cannot extend mercy without the help of God’s mercy!”
Dr. Crossen will present the two ways in which God’s mercy rages in the face of injustice. The event is free and open to anyone wanting to participate in a lively discussion.
The La Roche Common Ground Conversation, inspired by the call to be one in Christ, invites all interested persons with differing views about critical issues in the Church to engage in prayerful dialogue for the sake of building a Kingdom of God. Participants can make a free-will offering to support the Sister Candace Introcaso Student Emergency Fund.
Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, the late archbishop of Chicago, started the Catholic Common Ground Initiative in October of 1996. La Roche University holds Common Ground Conversations in honor of Father Eugene Lauer, the University’s former academic vice president, campus minister and chair of the humanities division.
Preregistration is strongly encouraged. To register for the event, visit laroche.edu/socialjustice. For more information, contact Gina Miller at 412-536-1085.
