Ms. Felton will receive up to $30,000 in scholarship funds, a summer internship at Trib Total Media and, upon graduation, an offer for full-time employment.

What inspires you to write?

There’s a Thomas Jefferson quote that really inspires me and showcases the importance of journalism: “Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”

I think that touches on what inspires me to write.  I'm inspired by the thought that my writing could inspire or educate people on important issues in our society.

Why did you apply for the Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship?

I’ve always wanted to pursue a career in journalism, so this opportunity immediately seemed like a perfect fit for me. Having the opportunity to work with this newspaper was incredibly exciting, and I was eager to apply.

What influenced you to pursue a career in journalism?

I’ve always loved to write, so journalism was an easy choice for me. I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of great teachers and professors who have helped guide me down this path.

I also see real significance in the field of journalism; it is imperative to have a free press in an educated democratic society. I wanted a career with meaning and I think that a career in journalism provides that.

How has La Roche prepared you for a career in journalism?

My writing classes at La Roche have helped me grow as a writer over the last few years. Writing for the Courier has given me a wonderful opportunity to expand my writing skills and publish my work.

Do you plan to accept the full-time job offer in May?

Definitely!

Did you start your internship with Trib Total Media?

I began on June 8 in their Tarentum location.

What organizations, honors societies, and clubs are you a member of at La Roche?

I’m the president of our karate club. I’m in Sigma Tau Delta and the National Society of Leadership and Success, as well as the Honors Institute. I also serve as a Providence Institute counselor.

Internships completed:

Campaign writer for District Attorney Stephen Zappala; research and design intern for the Depreciation Lands Museum; marketing intern for Little Italy Productions; research and design intern for Dr. Janine Bayer; writing intern for Bansen Labs.
