Sister Victorine PhotoThe 1998 Woman of Providence awardee is Sister Victorine Verosky. She entered the Congregation after graduating from Divine Providence Academy in 1929. Her life of scholarship in languages and literature was nurtured as the pursued a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education at Duquesne University, a Master’s Degree in Theology from Providence College, RI and a Ph.D. in English Literature from Fordham University. Following her Master’s education, she taught at Catholic high schools in Pennsylvania and Ohio. After completing her Doctorate, she returned to Pittsburgh as Academic Dean at La Roche College.

Within two years she was invited by the General Superior and by ecclesiastical authorities in Korea to begin a training program for young women interested in joining the Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence in a new Korean foundation. During the time she was a member of the faculty of Sogang University, the Jesuit University in Seoul. She remained in Korea as the founding Regional Superior for 21 years. She became an expert in the Korean language as well as in the literature of Asia. A testimony to her effectiveness is that this young, dynamic community now numbers 108 Sisters of Divine Providence.
From Asia, Sister Victorine traveled to Haiti, where she assumed the position of Academic Dean at the American University of Les Cayes. Her immersion in the cultures of Haiti earned her the lasting respect of the people with whom she worked, and through her efforts a young Haitian became a Pacem in Terris scholar at La Roche College in 1994. Today Sister Victorine is a member of the staff at Jeremiah’s Field, a shelter for homeless women in New York. Her life has been a life of scholarship and service. Her inspiration has come from her deep faith in a Provident God, whose wisdom and love for humanity she exemplifies so well. Sister Victorine Verosky is a Woman of Providence whom La Roche University is proud to honor.
