Professional Writing Tutor

La Roche University is accepting applications for the part-time position of Professional Writing Tutor, part of the University Writers’ Center, supporting the academic success of a diverse student population.  This position, along with other student support services, provides one-on-one consultations and workshops to undergraduate and graduate students to improve and refine writing, reading, research, presentation, and/or study skills.  

The Professional Writing Tutor impacts students’ skill development primarily through individual and small group reviews of students’ written work, but the Professional Writing Tutor may also assist with developing and identifying resources and conducting workshops.

This is a part-timestaff position, expected to work 10-15 hours/week during the academic year; summer hours may be possible based on enrollment. The pay range starts at $17.00/hour.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one and small group consultations on writing, reading, research, presentation, and study skills to undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines.
  • Complete required electronic reports for consultations.
  • Work jointly with the entire staff to handle physical office coverage including reception, answering inquiries, providing information regarding services and resources, and scheduling appointments.
  • Participate in required staff training activities and meetings.
  • Coordinate with the director to collect, maintain, and secure other data relevant for reporting utilization and for evaluating learning outcomes; participate in program evaluation meetings.
  • Assist the director on occasion with the following as assigned: promoting Writers’ Center services; developing print and online resources for use by students, staff, and faculty; planning, designing, and conducting workshops and class presentations; and recruiting, training, or evaluating undergraduate peer writing tutors. 

Education/Qualifications:

  • Master’s in English, Composition, Rhetoric, Communication Studies, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Education, or a related field with an emphasis in writing
  • Minimum of one year tutoring and/or teaching experience in higher education required; experience assisting students with understanding and conducting primary research projects, especially in nursing and health sciences, preferred.
  • Ability to view and critique student writing to encourage learning in all phases of the writing process; must be sensitive to students with diverse backgrounds and learning needs
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including knowledge of the conventions of both APA and MLA; ability to speak to groups of varying sizes
  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills; must be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Skilled with word processing software; utilization of technology for instruction of reading and writing, and scheduling appointments  
  • Knowledge of/experience with Microsoft Office (including Microsoft Teams), WCONLINE, and Canvas LMS preferred
  • Commitment to professional development; ability to provide and receive constructive feedback
  • Can work independently and cooperatively as part of a team
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, if needed
