La Roche to Host Professional Development Series for HR and Business Professionals

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 24, 2018 – This fall La Roche University will host the 24th installment of its widely popular Professional Development Series.

Presented by the graduate program in human resources management, the Professional Development Series offers seminars led by industry experts, informal networking opportunities and the chance for participants to earn credits for HR Certification Institute (HRCI) and Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) certification.

The series is ideal for business and HR professionals who want to learn how to effectively manage a variety of HR issues. Seminars will be held in the Ryan Room of the Zappala College Center at La Roche’s campus in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. Each event will begin at 6 p.m. with a reception for participants to enjoy light refreshments and an informal networking environment, followed by the presentation beginning at 6:30 p.m. The fall 2018 lineup includes:

This session will explore several organizations at various stages of transforming performance management philosophies, processes and practices. Mr. Thomas will share the specific steps being taken to replace annual reviews and/or performance ratings by forging a more effective and connected approach to goal setting, feedback, coaching and development. The seminar also will highlight the key role today’s managers can play in optimizing employee success and growth.

Dazed and Confused: What Every Employer Needs to Know about Medical Marijuana, Opioid and Prescription Drug Use in the Workplace

 Albert Lee and Kate Koop Irwin, employment law attorneys, educators and corporate trainers, will discuss the ever-changing Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Law and address legal concerns related to medical marijuana, opioid and other prescription drug use in the workplace. Mr. Lee and Ms. Irwin will review recent court decisions, the interaction between state law and accommodations under the ADA, potential conflicts with federal laws, the impact on workplace drug testing for applicants and current employees, and additional legal challenges for employers.
